The only issues I ever ran into were some known bugs with CUCM 7.01 running in VMWare, but they were easily resolved with some patches or an upgrade to CUCM 7.1. I have not run into any VMWare related issues with CUCM 8 and it runs quite well.
It is important to note that Cisco supports CUCM with VMWare ESXi on UCS for production, but for a lab environment Cisco has allowed the use of VMWare Server, Workstation, of Fusion since CUCM 6. Of course TAC will not provide assistance if issues arise, but when you install CUCM v6 – v8 it detects VMWare during the Hardware Validation Check and allocates a license for up to 3 nodes (1 Publisher and 2 Subscribers) plus 150 DLU’s.
Otherwise, if you install CUCM v6 – v8 directly on MCS hardware you get 1 node and 50 DLU’s. Cisco has made it very easy to utilize VMware for lab/testing environments.
I wish Broadsoft would do the same. I would love to do a video. Unfortunately my free time is few and far between. Most of the folks I encounter struggle with finding the right VMWare specifications when creating a virtual machine and therefore the install fails 90 minutes into the process, so I prefer to publish the known working specs up front so they may enjoy a smooth install process. The actual install procedure of CUCM is really straight forward. I think a video for post-install configuration to get phones up and running and call processing would be great. Maybe that will be my next project.
I am trying to replicate a VoIP lab by running CUCM and CUC along with Ubuntu Server as an NTP SERVER, within VMware Workstation 7. During CUCM installation it does not recognize my NTP server (10.40.0.1), although I can ping the CUCM server (10.40.0.4) from my Ubuntu NTP Server. CUCM states the NTP server is inaccessible.
I have the network adapters setup as Custom VMnet2, as I want my host to be separate. The VM network is using 10.40.0.0/24 network, and I put in a dummy ip for a router 10.40.0.1, although no routing will be taking place outside the network since they are all on the same subnet.
On the NTP server I did confirm via ps -A that the process is running, AND also I edited /etc/ntp.conf and made sure broadcast 10.40.0.255 was un-commented, so it would broadcast to the local subnet. Any suggestions?

Installing and Configuring Cisco Unified Real-Time Monitoring Tool You can install Cisco Unified Real-Time Monitoring Tool (RTMT), which works for resolutions 800.600 and above, on a computer that is running Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista, or Linux with KDE and/or Gnome client.
